Going on you get the fear?

Holidays are generally a relaxing time but for some it can be a stress or last minute panic, especially if you can’t switch off while away.

First there is there is the holiday prep; ensuring you have plenty of sun cream, packed for the right weather, got your flights, hotel and airport transfer booked. Then there is the worry on the way to the airport – have I got my passport? What did I forget to pack? And finally there is one thing we are all guilty of thinking about while we are on holiday – work. Constantly checking emails or worrying about the amount of work I will have to do when I get back is probably one of my worst holiday habits.

Most of us go on holiday to get away from the stresses of home but typically we can’t stop thinking about home while we’re away either! Ever stepped out the door and as soon as you get in the car suddenly thought ‘Did I leave my straightener on?’, ‘I hope I remembered to switch the oven off’, ‘I think I forgot to close the bathroom window...’ the list goes on.

Well I’ve come up with a few tips to allow you to have a stress-free holiday...

  1. Write a checklist before hand – Make a list of all the things you will need to pack and a pre-holiday to do list. I usually keep this in a separate notebook so I can add to it in the lead up to my holiday and scribble down any thoughts to stop me worrying about them. That way I don’t forget anything when it comes to packing!
  2. Do your research and get recommendations from friends – Hearing from friends about their experiences of destinations I haven’t visited before definitely helps me to feel more prepared and reassured. Next week I am off to Cuba and am slightly worried about the lack of planning I’ve done, but reading blog posts about it and speaking to other people who have been there makes me feel a bit more prepared.
  3. Turn off WiFi while away – Unless you really need it of course, but I think holidays are a perfect opportunity to escape and switch off. Avoid checking emails or looking at Facebook every five minutes and you will spend a lot more time taking in the sights and experiences around you.
  4. Invest in a good book – This may seem like an obvious one but unless I get really stuck in with a gripping book I can easily get distracted and not feel motivated to read. I recently read Elizabeth is Missing, which I couldn’t put down, and I’m currently reading The Stylist by Rosie Nixon
  5. Put your mind at ease – Get a neighbour to keep an eye on your home or invest in Smart Homes by Panasonic. It monitors and protects your property and can even switch appliances on and off from your smartphone or tablet.
