The Benefits of Derma Rolling

Derma Rolling (or micro needling) is a procedure I had never come across until recently. It is essentially a small skin roller which is made up of tiny needles that help to stimulate collagen production and increase blood circulation as you move it across your skin. I have been using Swiss Clinic's skin treatment kit after reading about it on the lovely Lydia Millen's blog earlier this year, and wanted to share how I'd been getting on with it after a few months.

As I'm now entering my late (eek!) twenties, anti-ageing and preventing wrinkles is something I'm becoming more concerned of, so I'm trying to change my skincare to reflect that. Without wanting to go down the route of fillers or botox, derma rolling seemed like a good alternative. I used the Skin Renewal kit (£84), which contains a 0.2mm Skin Roller and Swiss Clinic's Rejuvenating Serum, and also a sanitising spray (£18) to clean the roller.

How do you use it?
The trick is to take your time with this. You shouldn't press down too hard or rub it vigorously over your skin, just take one area of your face at a time and slowly massage it different directions. I like to work upwards so I'll go across my chin, then each cheek and my forehead - rolling it up and down then left to right. Then use Swiss Clinic's sanitising spray to clean the roller and pop it back in its plastic casing.

Does it hurt?
No, but that doesn't mean you can't feel it. For me, using the roller created more of a tingling or slight pricking sensation but the needles are so short they weren't uncomfortable at all. I found you could feel the roller more around sensitive, delicate areas of the skin like close to the eye area. It did make my skin quite red after use, but this just shows it's working, which is why I prefer to use it in the evenings then allow my skin to soak up a night-time serum.

How often do you use it?
You can use the roller as often as you like, but personally I don't like to use it daily as I don't want my skin to become too used to it. Instead I opt for a few times a week. After use I then pop on the Rejuvenating Serum which is a gel-like formula that helps my skin to recover and also stimulates collagen production, to reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

I've noticed a significant difference since introducing derma rolling into my skin routine and found it has been one of the most effective at-home treatments I've used. It allows my skincare products to work much more effectively and means I wake up with smooth and healthy looking skin. My biggest skincare concerns are lines on my forehead and large, open pores on my cheek area and I've found it has helped to reduce the wrinkles on my forehead and generally make my skin look more radiant and less congested.
