Tips When Moving Home

Moving house or moving into your own place for the first time can be daunting, particularly when it comes to budgeting for rent, bills, and getting all the utilities set up. Not only is the process stressful but it can be costly too with deposits to pay up front.

I always thought moving was the most stressful thing in the world - particularly as I once moved three separate times in London within one year! However, here's a few hints and tips to make the process run smoothly...

Moving and storage:

When packing up your things make sure you're prepared so that when you're surrounded by boxes you know exactly what's where. Try to clear as much clutter as possible before you move and label up boxes before you move or take photos of what's inside in case you need to access things quickly.

Clear plastic storage boxes are so handy as they can be stored under beds or in wardrobes once you move and it's easy to see what's in there! These can be pricey so try to borrow off friends...alternatively your local supermarket will have plenty of cardboard boxes they can spare!

The best thing about moving home is making the place your own and decorating it. Homeware decorations don't have to be expensive and there are plenty of shops that let you pick up a bargain. I love the homeware sections of supermarkets like Sainsburys and Asda, and Wilko also has a great selection.

Rather than pay for expensive prints I've taken to buying plain white frames from Wilko then printing off images off Pinterest to decorate my lounge and walls. Fairy lights are also my all time favourite thing to instantly make a place feel more homely.

Where to start?! When it comes to gas & electric, tv, and broadband it's best to do your research beforehand into costs and packages. It's no secret that internet is probably the most important thing to get set up when you move to a new place - whether you want to browse Netflix or if you rely on it for working from home. Internet access is essential for our day-to-day lives so it's best to get these set up asap! Likewise there are so many TV packages available so it's worth looking into whether you want a combined TV & broadband deal or separate. There are plenty of sites that will help you find a deal for broadband and tv and I found asking friends for recommendations made the process a lot easier.

In terms of your gas and electric - it's always best to get a meter so you pay for exactly what you use.

When it comes to broadband, yes you want something that's cheap but you also want a reliable and fast service too that isn't likely to keep cutting out. Cable compares packages for TV, Broadband and Mobile Phone so you can save hundreds when you switch providers.

These tips should make the prep for moving home, and the process itself, hassle free and a little easier on the purse strings!
