Calm in the city

Since moving to London I dash around everywhere walking ten times faster, my impatience has skyrocketed, and I seem to constantly find my shoulders tensed up by my ears. I don’t know what it is about this city that seems to induce so much stress but often I’ll be walking down the street and think, ‘oh god I’ve forgotten to take a breath recently’.

The importance of slowing down and taking some time out is vital, so every now and then I love to escape for a little relaxation and pamper time. London may seem like constant hustle and bustle but there are some gems in the city that are ideal for getting away from it all.

I recently came across the spa at K West Hotel, a calming oasis just a few minutes’ walk away from the madness of Christmas shopping at the Westfield shopping centre in Shepherd’s Bush.

The hotel itself used to be the BBC Recording Studio Kensington House in the 70s and 80s and underwent a big redesign in 2014 to reflect its musical heritage. Since becoming a hotel the venue still hosts musicians as many stay there while playing at the O2.

Downstairs is the incredible spa, complete with a sauna, steam room, hydrotherapy pool, foot spa, and more. One of the most unique features is its ‘Snow Paradise’ which mimics the Finnish experience of alternating between freezing and steamy environments. The spa also features a twinkling hydrotherapy pool, sanarium, sauna, dry flotation tank, aromatic herbal steam room and the fully equipped K Fit gymnasium.

I booked myself in for a candlelight massage and spent some time in the spa before my treatment. Here I had plenty of time to laze around reading my book, there are separate relaxation areas where you can lie around in your robe and slippers. I then made use of the foot spa, steam room and sauna.

Once it was time for my treatment I was greeted by my friendly therapist who chatted through my treatment and asked if there were any areas she’d like me to focus on (my stiff shoulders!) I was then asked to smell three different candles and choose which spent appealed to me most. The oils from the candle were then used as a massage oil and I had a full body massage for an hour. It was totally relaxing and I came out of the room feeling like I was walking on a cloud.

After all treatments you are led into the relaxation room, a mood-lit room with individual chairs to lie back in relax in and sip herbal tea.

You could easily spend the best part of a day here making full use of the facilities. When I walked outside again afterwards I’d almost forgotten I was in busy London!
