Getting eyelash extensions for the first time

I've been thinking about getting eyelash extensions done since before Christmas, after a colleague suddenly walked into the office one day with the curliest, most glam looking eyelashes I have ever seen (while still looking completely natural) and said that she wasn't wearing any mascara! This seemed too good to be to true but she told me the secret is eyelash extensions.

Since seeing my colleague's lashes I've pretty much been Googling everything there is to know about it for the last couple of months and finally booked myself in! So I've put together this guide on my experience of getting them done for the first time...

Eyelash extensions are individual lashes that are applied to your existing eyelashes, semi permanently. They can be as natural or as full as you want and the whole process is pain free and can last anything from three to four weeks.

While I was looking into the different types of eyelash extensions it got pretty confusing - full sets, half sets, Russian volume, mink lashes.... I didn't really know where to start but I soon realised the best thing is to contact a salon and ask their advice. If it's your first time I'd start with classic lash extensions and either go for a half set (which means around 65% of your lashes have extensions on them) or a full set.

Living in London there are no shortage of lash salons available but I chose a local boutique close to my home in Clapham - Lara Lashes London. It is just a five minute walk from Clapham Junction station and specialises in lash treatments as well as brows and waxing.

I'm already fortunate enough to have fairly long eyelashes, however, as they're blonde they pretty much disappear on my face. I wanted to be able to wake up looking like I already had mascara on, without the sin of sleeping in my makeup. I liaised with the salon beforehand on what I wanted over email and they were really helpful and advised to try a half set as it was my first time.

Once booked in, you have to go for a patch test at least 24 hours before your appointment. This is where they apply a couple of the individual lashes to each eye to check you don't have any reactions to the glue.

On the day of the treatment I had a chat with the lash therapist to discuss how I wanted the lashes to look and then she got to work! You lie down on a bed and they apply some pads underneath each eye then you just close your eyes, lie back and relax. The process took around an hour and wasn't painful at all, in fact it was fairly relaxing. You hardly feel the lashes being applied (so if you're one of those people that doesn't like people touching your eyes - don't worry!)

Once the lashes were applied the therapist checks you're happy with them and that they feel comfortable. I was surprised at just how light they feel - you don't even realise you have anything on your lashes and it's completely unlike wearing false eyelashes.

You're then advised not to get your lashes wet for the next 24 hours, so avoid showering & bathing, and avoid makeup or oily products near your eyes.

I am so pleased with how they turned out as they are just the right level of volume, length and curl. They are nearly defined and this means I won't have to wear mascara for around four weeks. Now that I have seen what a half set looks like I am considering booking a full set for a future occasion!

Lara Lashes London were extremely friendly and helpful when discussing how I wanted my lashes to look and I can't wait to go back again! A half set costs £70 while a full set costs £95, which is really reasonable. You can also get an infull / tidy treatment to maintain your eyelash extensions for £50. Lara Lashes also offers LVL (a length, volume and lift treatment) for £60 or just a tint for £15.

Thank you Lara Lashes for my wonderful treatment! If you have any questions on eyelash extensions, I've answered them below....

1. What type should I go for?

There are many different lash types available and admittedly it really threw me at first but the salon will be able to talk this through and advise you. Your best bet is to choose between a half set and a full set; a half set means you have coverage of around 65% of your lashes whereas a full set will have extensions on all of your lashes.

If it's your first time or you just want a natural look or are worried about lashes looking too much, start with a half set. This is where most first timers start and will essentially make your lashes look more defined, as if you are wearing mascara. If you want something a little bolder, as if you are wearing false lashes, go for a full set.

There are many different lengths and curl types available and the technicians understand that everyone wants different looks, so every experience is completely individual and personalised. You will never walk out with too long or too thick lashes as they will be able to help you decide which look will be best for you.

2.Does it hurt?

Absolutely not. In fact, the process was really quite relaxing and enjoyable. You lie on a comfy bed and close your eyes for between an hour to two hours while calming music plays in the background.

3. How long do they last?

A half set will last around three weeks while a full set will last up to four weeks. Just make sure you avoid getting them wet for the first 24 hours. You'll also be given a little spoolie brush to brush your lashes out.

4. Can you wear makeup with them?

Stay away from mascara as this will make your lashes clump together. You can still wear eyeshadow and eyeliner with lash extensions, just make sure you don't use an oily makeup remover to remove your makeup.
